I was listening to blink 182’s "What’s My Age Again?" and the line "The state looks down on sodomy" really got me thinking. When that song first came out way back when I was in grade eight, I didn’t know what sodomy meant. I remember my little thirteen/fourteen year old innocent self looking sodomy up in the dictionary and thinking: "What? Ha ha that’s pretty bad." The dictionary defined sodomy as (in short) homosexuality or beastiality. And that’s what I’d believed sodomy to be for five or six years. Now that I’m at the wise old age of nineteen, cusping on my twenties, I know how illegal sodomy is. Sodomy is FORCED penetration of an orifice, with either an object or a penis. Sodomy is what serial killers do to their victims. The beastiality still sticks. I understand now. Knowing the definition of a word doesn’t mean you know what it means. Having the word used in context, along with the definition, makes a HUGE, OVERWHELMING difference. Stupid blink 182 making me go all philosophical. But it is true. Just because you know the meaning of a word, does not mean you know how to use it.
